MY THOUGHTS AND BOOK REVIEW
I was emotionally hooked from the first page of the story which centers on April Manning, a woman whose inherent generosity has led to her downfall. After being defrauded of her savings by a trusted friend, she faces eviction and a desperate need to return to her former interior design role at an architectural firm. This return is complicated by the presence of her ex-boyfriend, Hunter Ellis, now the head architect, and the fact that their past relationship ended in infidelity. The situation intensifies dramatically when the firm's owner is murdered, and the murder weapon is found at April's doorstep. There is a sudden twist in the initial chapters as the murder takes place.
This event thrusts April into the role of prime suspect, making her a target for the real killer. As she flees her home and is pursued through the Tennessee wilderness, April grapples with past trauma of abandonment and navigates a minefield of suspicious characters, including a new handyman and an estranged family member. The story promises a race against time as April must uncover the murderer in Smoky Creek before becoming the next victim.
The reader as me can keep guessing till the end, Is April the protagonist truly as innocent as she seems? whether Hunter Ellis (April's Ex-Boyfriend, Head Architect) Did he have a connection to the murdered owner? and the Mysterious New Handyman: This is the most obvious possibility. He could be a professional killer hired to silence the owner or April, or an opportunist who saw a chance to commit murder. I'm not giving any spoilers out here.
Very much recommended novel for those who need a break from other genres to read a crime thriller mystery.
BOOK DESCRIPTION
First, they stole her trust. Now they want her life.
April Manning’s generous nature has always been a gift, and her greatest weakness. After being scammed out of her life savings by a trusted friend, April is left with an eviction notice and one last hope: reclaiming her position as an interior designer at her old architectural firm, even if it means a showdown with head architect Hunter Ellis, her cheating ex.
But that’s not the only hitch. When the owner of the firm turns up dead, the last thing April expects to find is the bloody murder weapon on her doorstep.
Now the killer sets a plan for April and suspicion flares at every turn…from the mysterious new handyman to an estranged family member she’s tried to forget. Chased from her dream home and cornered like prey, April is hemmed by the wintry forests of Tennessee with few options. As chilling memories of childhood abandonment haunt her, it seems everyone has a hidden agenda to take April down.
Only one thing is certain. A monster is stalking Smoky Creek, and April must unmask them before they land the fatal blow.
