BOOK REVIEW #THE EMPTY KAYAK #JODE MILLMAN #QUEEN CITY CRIMES#PUBLISHER : LEVEL BEST BOOKS #CRIME FICTION

MY THOUGHTS AND BOOK REVIEW

The unputdownable story where detective Ebony Jones is involved in a mystery case when she was assigned where a guy went missing as a strong storm popped up while he was kayaking on the Hudson River in this novel Queen City Crimes series. Ebony is shocked to learn that the missing kayaker is Kyle Emory, the ex-boyfriend of Ebony's estranged best friend, attorney Jessie Martin, and they have a daughter, Lily. Ebony has another surprise for Jessie, who has now been reunited with her true love, Judge Hal Samuels: Kyle is engaged to Olivia Vargas, a much younger social media personality. The novel is all about police procedures, finding, and investigations done by Ebony to first ascertain whether Kyle is missing or deceased; if he is deceased,  will she be able to determine whether his death was accidental, suicide, or murder?

If Kyle is murdered, those suspects that Ebony will have, include Olivia, who is now entitled to half of Kyle's life insurance benefit; Olivia's debt-ridden brother, Auggie; and Olivia's current husband, Raul Esperanza, whom she hasn't yet divorced.

The author has a well-paced story with fantastic characters and a difference including many twists. Tension builds up as the strong characters make this novel very outstanding. Totally gripping crime novel which can be read as a standalone.

MY THOUGHTS AND BOOK REVIEW

While her father is abroad working as a boatman on the canals, Meg Taylor struggles to care for her younger siblings and sick mother on the banks of the River Calder. Meg longs for a different life, far from their disease-ridden slums and crushing poverty, but she won't ever abandon her family. Meg worries that her family's future will become even more hopeless as trade shifts from canals to railroads and Meg's father stubbornly clings to the past. If only she could find a way to save them.

Christian Henderson is sick of his wealthy family's avarice. He observes the destitution all around him and wishes he could do more to assist the proud members of the working class he meets. People with the courage of Meg Taylor, whom he greatly admires.

Christian is charmed with Meg right away because, despite her poverty, she is energetic and proud.

Meg's fantasies of dating a guy like Christian are unreal. How is it possible for a girl from the docks to be with a man of his wealth? Even worse, what would happen to her beloved family if she gives into her heart's desire to be with him?

"AnneMarie Brear stands side to shoulder with the best works by some of the genre's greatest authors, Poignant, strong, and searingly passionate.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

The Waterfront Lass

Wakefield 1870

On the banks of the River Calder, Meg Taylor struggles to care for her younger siblings and sick mother whilst her father is away working as a boatman on the canals. The slums where they live are rife with disease, and Meg longs for a different life, away from the grinding poverty, but she'll never leave her family.

But with the canals slowly dying as trade moves to the railways, and with Meg’s father stubbornly holding onto the past, Meg fears her family’s future is going to get even bleaker. If only there was a way she could save them….

Christian Henderson is tired of the greed of his wealthy family. He sees the poverty around him and wishes he could do more to help the proud working-class people he meets. People like Meg Taylor, whose courage he so admires.

From the moment he meets Meg, Christian is captivated – Meg might be poor, but she is proud and spirited

Meg’s dreams of being with a man like Christian are fantasy. How can a lass from the waterfront be with a wealthy man such as he?

And worse, if she follows her heart to be with him, what will happen to the family she loves?
