Book Review #Every Day Is Christmas #Karen Schaler #Hawktale Publishing #Christmas Romance Fiction # Contemporary Romance

MY THOUGHTS AND BOOK REVIEW

Alexis Taylor who loved her work all the time, owner of Taylor Investments, the top financial firm in the country had everything but is lonely and certainly stressed around the Christmas holidays. She had given up falling in love a long time ago, all her boyfriends she dated had a relationship with her as more of a business partnership. She always put work first. When it's Christmas Eve, it's only Alexis who is working. She had employees working which made her proud. Instead of bringing excitement and the holiday feel to her office as a boss, she was grieving her parents and totally disconnected from the lights and decorations that brought magical moments. As she started to hallucinate, she had to be in charge of her emotions. Because of her work, she never celebrated Christmas.

That's when Justin drives her around as her employee wants to reveal his feelings for her. Her driver, Justin admired Alexis's strength, dedication, and fearlessness. You can give your whole life to your career and sacrifice on a daily basis therefore it was a price that Alexi paid that this story brings to a reader's attention. Instead of accepting the present moment everything she talked about brought stress in her. Everything Alexi did was connected to her career. In the end, Justin turns out to be a Trustworthy person she can confide about her frustrations with work and relationships even though losing her parents brings pain and memories. The last thing she wanted was to love someone truly again and risk losing them like she had lost her parents. Was Alexi better off lonely? Can the wonderful festive season spark her to return to the Christmas spirit that she kindled 20 years ago during her childhood with her mom and dad whom she missed dearly?

With touches of humor, laughs, and emotions, the author has brought the Christmas spirit in me. Highly recommend reading at this season of Christmas. Thanks to NetGalley and Hawktale Publishing for a digital complimentary copy for my honest review.

Book Review #The Woman with a Purple Heart #Diane Hanks #Sourcebooks Landmark Publisher # World War II Historical Fiction

MY THOUGHTS AND BOOK REVIEW

This novel by Diane Hanks is a very interesting and gripping narrative of connected events that happened in 1941 during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Annie Fox returned from her transfer from the country Philippines in 1940 and was sent to Honolulu, Hawaii. She was transferred to Hickam Air Field Station Hospital, a small ward-bed facility with six nurses, after passing the exam to become Chief Nurse there. Assuming the job of Chief Nurse, Annie Fox, or 1st Lieutenant Fox as she was known in the Army, arrived at Station Hospital on Hickam Field in November 1941. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, causing widespread destruction and devastation to hospitals across the island. Annie, in charge of Hickam, faced deafening noise, bombs, and enemy aircraft, while staff tried to save wounded patients. In Honolulu, Hawaii, Hickam Field served as the Army's main airfield and bomber facility. It was close to Pearl Harbor, the principal Pacific hub for the US Navy. As the title of this novel captured my attention I understood that Army Lt. Annie G. Fox was the first female wearer of the Purple Heart in 1942 for her bravery during the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The Purple Heart was awarded for

“outstanding performance of duty and meritorious acts of extraordinary fidelity. . .

During the attack, Lieutenant Fox, in an exemplary manner, performed her duties as head Nurse of the Station Hospital. . .

in addition, she administered anesthesia to patients during the heaviest part of the bombardment, assisted in dressing the wounded, taught civilian volunteer nurses to make dressings, and worked ceaselessly with coolness and efficiency, Her fine example of calmness, courage, and leadership was of great benefit to the morale of all with whom she came in contact...”

Many more American servicemen would probably have perished if not for the bravery and promptness of ladies like Annie Fox. I had never heard of Annie Fox at Pearl Harbor bombings before until I read the novel.

Fox received the Purple Heart for her outstanding service on the morning of December 7, 1941. She was recognized for her ability to calmly carry out her responsibilities as the station hospital's head nurse, which included supervising volunteer nurses and delivering anesthesia despite being heavily bombarded by Japanese forces.

I adore the author's writing and the intense research on the events in 1941 WW2 between Japan and the USA. Thanks to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Landmark Publisher for a complimentary digital copy for my honest review.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Based on the real life of Lieutenant Annie Fox, Chief Nurse of Hickam Hospital, The Woman with a Purple Heart is an inspiring WWII novel of heroic leadership, courage, and friendship that also exposes a shocking and shameful side of history.

Annie Fox will stop at nothing to serve her country. But what happens when her country fails her?

In November 1941, Annie Fox, an Army nurse, is transferred to Hickam Field, an air force base in Honolulu. The others on her transport plane are thrilled to work in paradise, but Annie sees her new duty station as the Army's way of holding the door open to her retirement. But serving her country is her calling and she will go wherever she is told.

On December 7, Annie's on her way to work when the first Japanese Zero fighter plane flies low over Hickam's Parade Ground. The death and destruction that follow leave her no time to process what's happening. She rallies her nurses, and they work to save as many lives as they can. But soon their small hospital is overwhelmed. Annie drives into Honolulu to gather supplies, nurses, and several women who will donate blood. However, the nurses are Japanese Americans, and the blood donors are prostitutes.

Under Annie's leadership and working together in unexpected ways, they make it through that horrific day, when one of the Japanese-American nurses and Annie's friend, Kay, is arrested as a suspected subversive. As Hickam tries to recover, Annie works to find her friend and return Kay to her family. But Annie's love for her country is put to the test. How can she reconcile the American bravery and resilience she saw on December 7 with the prejudice and injustice she witnesses just a few months later?

Book Review #The Art of Love and Lies #Rebecca Anderson #Shadow Mountain Publishing # Historical Romance Victorian Mystery

MY THOUGHTS AND BOOK REVIEW

Manchester 1987: Rosanna Hawkins is a masterful artist from the Victorian modern era who knew her paintings were "Nice" and "little." From the original paintings, they were intolerant. Rosanna was an upstanding woman of unimpeachable character with a family peopled with uprightness. Her employer Anton Greystone was astonished and delighted by her reproduced masterworks which reflected each stroke, each layer, and moreover, she was quick. Her speed and artistic style could match any style, be it modern, like Cole, or classical. Among the wealthy clients who either loved art or wished to understand it, her Renaissance work was highly in demand. She was not a creator, she reproduced with a great deal of skill, simplicity, and clarity. The masterworks Rosanna made were referred to as "Parlor versions" to sell to the emerging upper middle class of Manchester, as well as to some of the higher classes who preferred their painting to be bought cheaply.

Anton promises Rosanna to expand her work everywhere not only in local houses but also in the drawing rooms and parlors of fine homes from London to Glasgow and beyond. Rosanna was proud that she know how to distinguish her reproductions from the originals they so perfectly reflected. Anton took the money by selling the reproduced painting of Rosanna to the wealthy working class so that they could festoon their walls and halls with pictures.

Manchester was about to witness a vast array of world-famous art. Rosanna was interested and delighted to visit the Art Treasures exhibition display of Rembrandt etchings where she will own an original print on the streets of Manchester. What attracted visitors from London and America to Manchester's Arts Treasure exhibition was The Manchester Madonna, Michelangelo's recently discovered fragment of a study for Mary and Jesus painting. Rosanna desires to take this opportunity to visit the exhibition to educate herself to study, ponder and experiment with copying the masters up and close and in person. She is confident she could replicate the paintings at the exhibition flawlessly. Anton asked Rosanna to recreate the partial work of the Manchester Madonna, to recreate the painting to her surprise. So that she makes a worthy copy that will make them both rich. The concern is whether will Rosanna be able to duplicate an unfinished work to reproduce a partial work? The intention was to be famous, gain rewards, accolades, and greed to become rich.

The role of head of exhibition security at the Art Treasure in Manchester, thrilled Martin Harrison. Rosanna and Martin's paths cross in the hallways and galleries of the exhibition. Hawkins explains to Martin the art pieces that he is not aware of which amused and delighted him with a story, a painting, a sculpture, or a sketch. As they admire each other's talents and looks but their encounter only becomes romantic and flirtatious. The irony happens here as Martin accuses Rosanna of copying the paintings and for accompanying a theft that occurs at the exhibition.  Rosanna wants to prove her innocence and Martin is on the way to catch the real thief of the paintings that goes missing on the day of Queen Victoria's visit to the Art exhibition in Manchester. The chase begins!!

The author has researched plenty about art history and brought to light the interesting era of Victorian times. The characters are intriguing and bring surprises along the way. Easy read and can be read as a standalone novel. The story is a bit predictable though after the half till the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel as it was a sweet and wonderful read.

Thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for an advance copy for my honest review.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Manchester, England, 1857

Rosanna Hawkins is one of Manchester’s finest artists, even though no one knows her name. She reproduces “parlor versions” of classic masterpieces with near-perfect precision, which her employer then sells to the emerging upper-middle class families.

When the largest art exhibition ever to be held in England opens in Manchester, Rosanna is excited to visit. She meets the handsome Inspector Martin Harrison, who is head of security, and is immediately intrigued by his charm, confidence, and portrait-worthy good looks. The two spend many a flirtatious afternoon exploring the exhibition hall, discussing art, and sharing their secret hopes. Rosanna dreams of painting something original and meaningful, and Martin hopes to one day shed the shadow of his father’s notorious past.

But when they discover the theft of some of the paintings—and all the evidence points to Rosanna—she must convince Inspector Harrison she is innocent and proposes a plan to capture the real art thief.

It is a daring race to catch the criminal before he disappears with the most priceless piece in the collection—Michaelangelo’s The Manchester Madonna. If Rosanna and Inspector Harrison fail, not only will the painting be lost forever but so will their chance to paint their own happily ever after.

MY THOUGHTS AND BOOK REVIEW

France 1935: Madeleine Grant, a Londoner girl meets a communist young man Giles Martin at the end of her French literature study at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Making the most time in Paris being torn between wanting to be the dutiful student and the attraction she felt to Giles had ended up dating him at various Parisian cafes. Madeleine's mother died in the war and her father marries a war widow - Eleanor. Soon caught between Paris and excitement and Giles. They fell head over heels in love with each other and then they get married, out of their wedlock they have a son - Oliver Louis Martin. Giles starts after that and goes to work as a Journalist reporter at a newspaper in France as a rising star of the left wing as communism is what it represented. And then the inevitable happens in 1939 Britain and France declared war on Germany.

There was a fear that Germany would invade France soon and be worse than the Great War. Worried about Madeleine and Oliver's safety Giles asks them to go back to England. As expected the Germans were pouring into the northeast of France. Giles decides to stay back in France to fight for his country. Madeleine finds a job when she moves to England as a teacher at a local secondary school. Madeleine felt hopeless as she thought Giles is doing some undercover resistance and wondered what chance of survival he might have. Oliver was not having an easy adjustment to life in England either as he have attended a French school until now. As the invasion of France is getting disastrous Madeleine heard nothing from Giles.
Bombs started falling in London in the autumn of 1940, there were air raid warnings and it was dangerous while the world shook in the muffled thump of falling bombs. They were terrified of the fierce bombings.

Soon there arrived news that Oliver's train that he traveled was bombed and he goes missing, therefore Madeleine thinks her son - Oliver is killed and dead. After that, the war office meets Madeleine, offering her to work as a translator sending out spy messages - infiltrator of France. Madeleine gets arrested by the Gestapo when working at Fontainebleau as an undercover agent. She gets tortured and there was no escape for her. At the same time, Oliver is shipped to nuns and goes through horrible treatment in Australia.

I enjoyed Rhys Bowen's writing and research. I have always admired Rhys Bowen's novels. Madeleine travels from Paris to England and then to Australia in search of her enemies who tormented her. Her heroic courage and fearless character as a wife and a mother is being portrayed emotionally. There is heartbreak, bravery, and forgiveness knitted together in the storyline. A must-read for historical fiction readers.

Rhys Bowen is the New York Times bestselling author of two historical mystery series as well as several internationally bestselling historical novels, two of which were nominated for Edgar Award

Rhys was born in Bath, England and educated at London University but now divides her time between California and Arizona. Her books have been nominated for every major mystery award and she has won twenty of them to date, including five Agathas.

She currently writes two historical mystery series, each very different in tone. The Molly Murphy mysteries feature an Irish immigrant woman in turn-of-the-century New York City. These books are multi-layered, complex stories with a strong sense of time and place and have won many awards including Agatha and Anthony. There are 19 books so far in this series plus three Kindle stories, Rhys’s daughter, Clare Broyles, now cowrites the series with her

Then there is Lady Georgie, She's 35th in line to the throne of England, but she's flat broke and struggling to survive in the Great Depression. These books are lighter and funnier than Molly's adventures. They poke gentle fun at the British class system--about which Rhys knows a lot, having married into an upper class family rather like Georgie's.

As a child Rhys spent time with relatives in Wales. Those childhood experiences colored her first mystery series, about Constable Evans in the mountains of Snowdonia.

The novel is all about finding missing Chris and figuring out whether any chance Kyle or Jason could have been involved in Chris's disappearance. Some drug connections and drug deals come in the picture.

Tony followed River to Virginia to open a detective agency. This novel also focuses on River's damaged relationship with her divorced parents and coping with their problems. Also, there is another incident where a strangler a killer who is running free at the Salt River tried to kill her and Tony one night. Different incidents and a variety of characters make this crime novel very outstanding. A must-read for crime novel readers. A Christian crime-based story. Why were River and Tony targeted by the lone killer strangler that night? Many twists and suspense along the way kept me wide awake to get to the end of the novel. Interesting plotline and vivid characters.
