MY THOUGHTS AND BOOK REVIEW
"Murder on Stage" by F.L. Everett transports readers to wartime England, specifically 1941, amidst the chaos of the Blitz. Trainee reporter Edie York finds herself thrust into a thrilling mystery when Leonard Lessiter, a lead actor of the Victory Gang Parade theatre group, collapses and dies on stage. This sudden death is just the beginning of a series of dramatic events that grip both the stage and the investigation.
Edie, determined to uncover the truth, reluctantly teams up with DCI Louis Brennan, whose plate is full with catching looters and ration cheats. Encouraged by Brennan to dig deeper, Edie delves into the lives of the theatre group members, unearthing a web of jealousies, secrets, and betrayals. The stakes rise when Ginny Sutton, the leading lady, goes missing on the same night as Lessiter's death.
As Edie navigates through the suspects, ranging from former lovers to ambitious newcomers, the story unfolds against a backdrop of wartime uncertainty and danger. The narrative builds tension as bombings intensify, and Edie herself narrowly escapes harm during a raid, only to stumble upon a grisly scene involving her chief suspect.
The author, F.L. Everett, skillfully weaves together a classic whodunit with historical context, capturing the essence of wartime England with vivid descriptions and authentic detail. The characters are well-drawn, each with their own motives and complexities, adding layers of intrigue to the plot. Edie emerges as a determined and resourceful protagonist, balancing her journalistic instincts with a growing sense of peril.
"Murder on Stage" is a compelling historical cozy mystery that will appeal to fans of Richard Osman and Agatha Christie. It combines elements of suspense, romance, and historical drama into a narrative that is both captivating and charming. With its engaging plot twists and well-crafted setting, this book promises to keep readers enthralled until the final curtain call.
BOOK DESCRIPTION
England, 1941. Trainee reporter Edie York is doing her best to keep calm and carry on despite London's Blitz dominating the news. But, at the theatre one night, she is thrust into a shocking mystery when the lead actor drops dead on stage...
The Victory Gang Parade theatre group are in town, entertaining the troops and the determinedly cheerful people of Manchester with their spectacular all-singing all-dancing show. But We'll Meet Again becomes impossible for two cast members, when Leonard Lessiter dies suddenly mid-song, and leading lady Ginny Sutton goes missing the very same night.
Reluctantly encouraged by DCI Louis Brennan - up to his ears catching looters and ration cheats - to investigate, Edie interviews the cast and quickly uncovers jealousies, lies and back-stabbings galore. From former lovers to bitter rejects, old hands to up-and-coming ingƩnues, any one of them could be guilty. And the leading lady Ginny is still missing.
Then Edie gets caught in a bombing raid and finds her chief suspect stabbed with a stage dagger. As the body count climbs, will Edie and Louis find Ginny alive? Can they uncover the most theatrical killer they've ever encountered? Or will it be the final curtain call for the detecting duo...?
