THE MAID BY NITA PROSE {BOOK REVIEW}

Molly worked as a maid at the Regency Grand hotel, cleaning up after the wealthy guests and cleaning up their messes. Mr. Snow, Molly's boss, regarded her as the ideal worker bee, toiling and toiling to prepare each honeycomb for the arrival of honey. A maid's job is physically demanding. It's exhausting and mind-numbingly repetitive, but she takes pride in her work and does it well every time. Despite the fact that her work is mostly invisible, they cannot function without her! Mr. Snow reminded his colleagues that without the worker bee, there would be no hive.

In the first few chapters, Mr. Charles Black and his second wife, Giselle Black, are frequent visitors to the Regency Grand. Mr. Black stays - or rather, stayed at the Regency Grand for at least a week every month while he oversaw his red estate affairs in the city. Mr. Black was a tycoon, a magnate, and an impresario. He and Giselle were frequently featured in the gossip columns. He could be described as a middle-aged silver fox, though he is neither silver nor a fox. Meanwhile, Giselle was frequently referred to as "a young little trophy socialite."

Molly thought to herself, "A maid's work is never done." Molly discovers Mr. Black dead in the hotel Regency Grand, lying flat on his back on the bed. As a result, Molly is being questioned by Detective Stark. The majority of the pages are memories of Molly's time with her Granma and Gran's wise advice to her.

Detective Stark discusses Mr. Black's toxicology report with Molly. Mr. Black had drugs in his system, the same drugs that were strewn across the floor of his bedroom on his bedside table. Detective Stark was convinced that it wasn't the pills that killed him. He had quite a bit in his system, but not nearly enough to kill him.

A cozy mystery novel to read through any hour of the day!

Favorite quotes from the Book, The Maid, Nita Rose.

“Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.”
― Nita Prose, The Maid

“That’s the trouble with pain. It’s a contagious as a disease. It spreads from the person who first endured it to those who love them most. Truth isn’t always the highest ideal’ sometimes it must be sacrificed to stop the spread of pain to those you love.”
― Nita Prose, The Maid

“Gran used to say, Never mind what others think; it's what you think that matters. And I agree. One must live by their own moral code, not follow like a sheep blindly.”
― Nita Prose, The Maid

“That’s the trouble with pain. It’s as contagious as a disease. It spreads from the person who first endured it to those who love them most. Truth isn’t always the highest ideal; sometimes it must be sacrificed to stop the spread of pain to those you love. Even children know this intuitively.”
― Nita Prose, The Maid

“Justice is like truth – it, too, is subjective. So many of those who deserve to be punished never receive their just deserts, and in the meantime, good people, decent people, are charged with the wrong crimes. It’s a flawed system – justice – a dirty, messy, imperfect system. But if the good people accept personal responsibility for exacting justice, would we not have a better chance of cleaning the entire world, of holding the liars, the cheaters, the users, and the abusers to account?”
― Nita Prose, The Maid

“You can’t judge a person by the job they do or by their station in life; you must judge a person by their actions.”
― Nita Prose, The Maid

“Cleanliness is next to godliness, my gran used to say, and I believe that’s a better tenet to live by than most.”
― Nita Prose, The Maid

MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW After Pearl is a captivating historical mystery set in 1942, during the turbulent months following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The novel follows Nicholas Bishop, an alcoholic private investigator and shell-shocked WWI veteran, who wakes up in a seedy hotel room with a hangover, a foggy memory, and two bullets missing from his revolver. Worse still, lounge singer Pearl DuGaye is dead, and Bishop is the prime suspect. As he stumbles through a haze of forgotten days, Bishop—assisted by the sharp and capable Gia Alessi, a loyal sidekick who may or may not still be on his payroll—dives into a web of deceit and danger. His investigation leads him through Buffalo’s underworld, rubbing shoulders with crooked politicians, high-society elites, and an underground group of American Nazis. All the while, he’s haunted by flashbacks from the Great War and shadowed by a one-eyed dog named Jake. The pacing is tight and energetic. The mystery unfolds gradually but never drag...
